This bold and brilliant stone is a variety of the mineral corundum (aluminium oxide) and can be pink through to blood-red.
The word 'ruby' comes from 'ruber' which is Latin for red and this stunning stone inherits is colour from the element chromium.
Burma was once the world's main source for rubies. Rubies have also been found in Thailand, Cambodia, Afghanistan, Australia, Brazil, Colombia, India, Namibia, Japan, Scotland, Madagascar, Nepal, Pakistan, Tajikistan, Tanzania, Vietnam, Sri Lanka, The Republic of Macedonia and the United States.
Rubies are said to be associated with life force, courage, passion, strength, enthusiasm, adventurousness and protectiveness.
Physically, they increase the chi in the body to stimulate health in all organs and system, emotionally they inspire self-confidence, zest for life, trust and willingness and spiritually they instil courage and altruism, bringing forth heroism.
