What is Rhodium Plating?

Rhodium plating is used on jewellery to create a white, reflective surface that will resist scratches and tarnish.

Applying a very thin layer of rhodium electroplating to jewellery helps to make it shine, as well as improve the durability of the piece.

For jewellery to be rhodium plated, it must first be thoroughly cleaned to remove all contaminants. It is dipped into a rhodium solution and a positive electrical charge is used to fuse the rhodium onto the base metal.

How Long Does Rhodium Plating Last?

How long rhodium plating lasts depends on a number of things. How often you wear the piece, the amount of wear and tear on the piece and the way in which your skin reacts to rhodium plating (body chemistry).

On average, we find clients need to rhodium plate ,for example, a white gold engagement ring every 6-12 months.

You will know when your piece needs to be re-plated when you start to see glimmers of gold coming through.
