It's October and we're thrilled to be celebrating the October birthstones of tourmaline and opal.
Tourmaline comes in a variety of colours including pink, brown, black, clear, green, yellow, red and blue. Tourmaline also comes in a stunning watermelon colour that combines pink and green.
Ancient Egyptians believed that tourmaline came by its many colours as it took the long way round in its journey through the Earth, and visited a rainbow.
Tourmaline is a balancing stone, which cleanses and purifies. It grounds spiritual energy and helps to clear and balance the chakras.
Australian opals were discovered in the late 1800's but were not favoured by European markets until their commercial value increased in the 1900's.
In 1932 Australia took over as the major producer of opals and remains the largest producer to this day.
Opals are multi-coloured and cons consist of small spheres of silica arranged in a regular pattern, with water between the spheres.
Found in Australia, Ethiopia, the USA and Mexico, opals were once rare and very valuable. In Europe, opals were a coveted stone by royalty.
As the birthstones for October, tourmaline and opal make wonderful birthday presents, anniversary present or push present for babies born during the month.
We have a lovely range of tourmaline and opal jewellery available in store and online.
